I arrived in Karachi on Monday last at 6 am. Anser was waiting for me. We went after an hour, to visit the Morning Star school in Korangi, surrounded by the familiar sight of rubbish-strewn streets, plastic bags and kids playing in the dirt. There has to be a better way to live.
And there is! Morning Star school now has 317 children – ridiculously crowded into totally inadequate space. A lot of improvement is needed in this school. They have just undergone an educational assessment and we expect the results next week. They need better training for their teachers, improved salaries and incentives, etc. But the children are clean, excited to be in school and enthusiastic to learn. It was a pleasure to see them.
Tuesday was the turn of the Holy Shepherd School – the first time I have seen the new Vocational Training School in action. The valley where the school is situated is as bleak, dusty and dry as ever. The school is an oasis and a privilege to be witness to. We had a meeting with the staff, for whom we have the highest respect.
